Description

"With Far From God, MOONSPELL return on July 3, 2026, via Napalm Records, an album born from five years of creative exploration, doubt, and ultimate self-discovery. Instead of playing it safe, the Portuguese dark metal pioneers deliver a work that feels like a rebirth: darker, sharper, and emotionally unfiltered.

Rather than adapting to modern trends, MOONSPELL consistently embrace their identity and substance. Far From God is a powerful yet elegant statement for gothic metal in its purest form: dark, romantic, dramatic, and uncompromisingly heavy.

The first single and title track, "Far From God," sets the tone with burning intensity. An anthem to tragic vampiric love, the song evokes the mystical, romantic darkness that once defined the genre." Dense guitars, deep, resonant vocals, captivating keyboards, and dramatic dynamic shifts create a timeless gothic aesthetic that imbues the vampire myth with both danger and elegance.

Songs like "Cross Your Heart" showcase a more accessible side of the album without sacrificing depth. Darkly tinged melodies meet deliberately placed, earthy riffs that finely balance tension and impact. The song evokes the atmosphere of earlier MOONSPELL releases, yet feels contemporary and dark. Lyrically, it addresses life on tour and lives lost far too soon. The relentlessly driving rhythm section reflects the endless movement of touring. Fernando Ribeiro's distinctive voice moves between profound heaviness and controlled intensity, carrying the song's emotional weight without veering into pathos.

With "The Great Wolf in the Sky" (featuring Alicia Nuhro on strings), MOONSPELL deliver one of the album's most epic moments. Expansive keyboard textures, powerful guitar harmonies, and a hymnal chorus create a track that is both melancholic and potent. The song is a tribute to all the wolves that have accompanied the band, as well as to a fan and friend who couldn't bear to hear the album anymore, and connects past, present, and future in a dignified whole.

Lyractically, Far From God moves between Baudelairean love, existential guilt and redemption, Christ-like resurrections, and the quiet dignity of the creatures of the night. Vampires, werewolves, and sacred symbolism serve not as escapism, but as expressions of genuine dark emotions: serious, romantic, and unfiltered. The album consciously eschews artificial gloss in favor of sincere fantasy, thus returning to the core of gothic metal.

Lyrics to Far From God, the album explores themes of Baudelairean love, existential guilt and redemption, Christ-like resurrections, and the quiet dignity of the creatures of the night. The band's upcoming album--produced by Jaime Gomez Arellano (Paradise Lost, Sólstafir, Ghost, among others)--sparkles like a black diamond: luminous yet interwoven with shadows, both musically and sonically. It harks back to the darker phase of MOONSPELL's classic era, yet sounds powerful and contemporary.

Far From God is not nostalgia. It's a statement. A gothic metal hallelujah. MOONSPELL's "Irreligious" of the 21st century. A powerful testament to the band's continued status as one of the defining forces in their genre, and an album that liberates gothic metal from stagnation and predictability!
