Description

"DRACONIAN are back and will release their new studio album, In Somnolent Ruin, on May 8, 2026, via Napalm Records. The new work from the Swedish gothic doom band promises to be one of the most personal albums in the band's history, taking listeners on a dreamlike journey through nine tracks, carried by vocalist Anders Jacobsson's poetic lyrics. As a recurring theme, DRACONIAN explore Plato's doctrine of the soul--a concept that organically developed during the creation of In Somnolent Ruin.

With Under a Godless Veil, DRACONIAN released their most successful album to date in 2020. Much has changed since then, yet everything feels familiar: With the introduction of new guitarist Niklas Nord (Myteri, DeathTrap, The Random Victims) in the spring of 2022, vocalist Lisa Johansson also returned. Johansson was the vocalist on the first five albums before leaving DRACONIAN in 2011 for personal reasons. In Somnolent Ruin This marks their official comeback after several festival appearances in recent years. The new lineup is completed by Daniel Johansson (ex-Wormwood), who joined DRACONIAN as a permanent member in 2025 following Jerry Torstenson's departure. He had previously worked with the band as a session musician.

Somnolent Ruin captures the essence of a band that has nothing left to prove, yet still does. Active since the 1990s, DRACONIAN released their debut album, Where Lovers Mourn, in 2003 and have consistently demonstrated their ability to combine otherworldly doom melodies with searingly heavy instrumentation, complemented by poetic lyrics. Their music penetrates deeply, forcing listeners to confront their inner demons, wander through the darkest shadows, and accept a temporary emotional numbness in order to emerge with newfound strength. DRACONIAN pose life's difficult questions, exploring Alienation and a search for an anchor in a perceived emptiness: a gripping, atmospheric journey through darkness, melancholy, and cathartic relief.

The opening track, "I Welcome Thy Arrow," captivates with haunting melodies and an interplay of fragile yet powerful vocals. "The Monochrome Blade" and "The Face of God" increase the tempo and bring eruptive dynamics. "Anima," performed by DRACONIAN together with Daniel Änghede, lends the album additional emotional depth, confronting listeners with their darker impulses, feelings of being lost, and self-reflection. "Asteria Beneath the Tranquil Sea" serves as an interlude between "I Gave You Wings" and "Cold Heavens," with the latter addressing the fragile balance between life and death while delivering the album's most intense vocal performance. "Misanthrope River" begins with an extended instrumental section and a narration by Simon Bibby, which slows the tempo but in no way diminishes the emotional impact and reflects the everyday struggles of life. The closing track, "Lethe," takes up the river of forgetfulness from Greek mythology. Whoever drank from it lost all memory. With the words "Oh, shooting star... Drown in me! Drink. Forget. Repeat," Jacobsson unleashes a dark reflection through demonic growls. And yet, In Somnolent Ruin remains a work of art that one doesn't want to forget, not for a single moment.
