Description

THERION have always challenged themselves when it came to breaking new ground while still staying true to their musical roots. On their 17th album, mastermind Christofer Johnsson and bandmate Thomas Vikstrφm have created something that would have been completely unthinkable for either of them before. "We tackled the only thing we haven't tried out of all these possibilities," Christofer explains. "We decided to give the fans what they've been asking for for so long. 'Leviathan' is the first album we've deliberately packed with THERION hits."

And just as the Swede said, the very first song of the album starts with a catchy and light melody: 'The Leaf Of The Oak Of Far' features female and male antiphonal vocals and a chorus that seems to come directly from THERION's "Theli" album, the album that marked the band's breakthrough in 1996. The next song is another real highlight called 'Tuonela', in which Christofer underlines its Finnish vibe with the help of NIGHTWISH's "metal voice" Marko Hietala. Next in this parade of future fan favorites comes the title track 'Leviathan', which features female operatic vocals and a monumental choir in classic THERION fashion.

Christofer Johnsson's passion for classical vocals, choirs, orchestras, as well as his penchant for epic melodies combined with rock and metal also comes through clearly in the following ballad 'Die Wellen Der Zeit', which again alludes to the German Romantic composer Richard Wagner. "Already since 'Theli' Wagner has been an integral part of THERION's musical core," Christofer points out. "When we started combining metal and opera, it was something new and original. Today, symphonic metal is already an established genre."
