With the recent signing of Umphrey's McGee, InsideOut Music took their first foray into the so-called jam band scene. Jam Rock is a phenomenon which in the US alone, already has a well established audience of millions. String Cheese Incident is the label's latest signing from this scene. Musically, both acts can hardly be compared to each other but their musical approach, their unique diversity and their varied stage performances, are what forms an association between the two acts. String Cheese Incident are a high-calibre act from an emerging genre that that takes its cues from The Grateful Dead. The band will certainly find favour in the old world as well as the current.
Blues, jazz, country, bluegrass, folk and rock 'n' roll - it's difficult to categorize "jam bands". That in itself proves to be one of their most distinctive trademarks. Widespread Panic, Gov't Mule, Phish, The Grateful Dead - what all of these bands have in common is their approach to playing for the moment. What happens on stage while playing together combined with audience interaction will define a particular performance and yet allow it to be completely different for the next. The artists live for their music and having the fans participate in this self-realization is all part of the process.
