Nightbearer Defiance

NIGHTBEARER return with their third album, "Defiance." The German death metal band from the East Westphalian city of Paderborn remain true to their signature HM-2 chainsaw guitar sound, as well as their undisguised love for melodic Swedish-influenced death metal. "Defiance" nevertheless marks another step in the steady and prudent evolution of their sound, adding blackened passages and doomy moments to their old-school style. The result of this broadening of horizons is an enormously atmospheric work that perfectly matches its lyrical concept. This album was directly inspired by the famous "His Dark Materials" trilogy by English author Sir Philip Pullman. On a deeper level, the lyrics revolve around humanity's emancipation from its oppression by religion. When NIGHTBEARER was founded in 2017 by singer Michael Torka and guitarist Dominik Hellmuth, their primary motivation was a burning passion for old-school death metal--and especially its golden age in the glorious 1990s. Following the 5-track EP "Stories from Beyond" (2018), their debut album "Tales of Sorcery and Death" (2019) immediately reached a top ten position (#8) in the soundcheck of German Rock Hard magazine, alongside abundant further praise from fans and critics. On their second studio album, "Ghosts of a Darkness to Come" (2022), NIGHTBEARER expanded the scope of their lyrical themes to conceptual grandeur, taking the listener on a journey into the dark events of Robert Jordan's epic saga "The Wheel of Time." With their third and most complete album to date, NIGHTBEARER demonstrate a perfect sense of timing by presenting the world with "Defiance," a literal and metaphorical death metal act of resistance based on the "His Dark Materials" trilogy!
