Description

Medieval Steel originally formed in Memphis, Tennessee in the spring of 1982. The band performed at local clubs before beginning to write their own material (which was later compared to Queensryche and Crimson Glory).

"As soon as we had our line-up solidified, we intensified our live activities," explains singer Bobby Franklin today. "We also knew that the next step was to compose our own material in order to gain a foothold in this business."

It took two more years until the four songs for their now legendary debut EP were found: "Medieval Steel", "Warlods", "Battle Beyond The Stars" and "Echoes". "When I wrote and recorded the material, I had no idea that it would take on a life of its own," says Bobby Franklin. And further: "I think we were able to choose from ten or eleven pieces. For financial reasons, we didn't record a full album. The recording itself went quickly and easily. We practiced three or four hours a day for two weeks "To be as prepared as possible. At that time we were all young boys with regular jobs. We were sure that our music had that certain something."

The EP in question was released in 1984 on the Memphis-based label SUR Records, which also ran its own studio: "They didn't have any metal bands under contract and mostly did country and blues. It was a real shock for them when we arrived . But they were nice people who treated us well. Jack Holder was the engineer and co-producer. He played in a band called Cobra and then decided to become an engineer, which he was very good at. I seem to remember "That 3,000 vinyl copies and 1,000 cassettes were produced. As soon as people got wind of the EP in Europe, it sold out in no time."

Medieval Steel are currently working on a brand new studio album!
