Description

High Roller Records, 40th anniversary edition, slipcase CD. Transfer, audio restoration, and mastering by Patrick W. Engel at TEMPLE OF DISHARMONY in January 2025. Five songs and three different singers (Michael Podyrbau, Keith Flax, and Rex McNew). When Glacier released their self-titled mini-album on the French label Axe Killer Records in 1985, it was largely ignored by the public. Only later did new generations of fans discover this completely underrated gem of classic US metal. Glacier formed as a cover band in Oregon in 1979. "I was in a group called Harlot in Salem, Oregon," singer Mike Podyrbau explains today, "and my girlfriend at the time told me that Glacier were looking for a singer. She put me in touch with their drummer, Pat Goebel, and I went up to Portland for an audition. I sang a Judas Priest song and one by Iron Maiden, and I got the job." Glacier's career now began to gain momentum, as it was time to record their first demo, titled "Ready For Battle." Podyrbau recalls: "A friend of former bassist/vocalist Scott Prinzing gave us the opportunity to enter a studio for the first time. We recorded 'Live For The Whip' there. Later, we moved to Northstar Recording Studio to record the remaining three tracks: 'Ready For Battle,' 'Devil In Disguise,' and 'Speak No Evil.' I don't even know why we didn't re-record 'Live For The Whip' professionally, because it was definitely a really solid song." According to Podyrbau, the finished demo was sent to various labels: "Yes, absolutely. PAR Records showed interest, but the band ultimately decided on Axe Killer. At this point, Glacier ran into a problem: The companies didn't want to release an EP with only three tracks. However, I had already dropped out because I was pursuing a career as a professional water skier. I had already sung the songs 'Confession', 'Vendetta', and 'When Heavens At Hand' live a few times, but the guys wanted to go in a different direction. So we hired two new singers: Rex McNew recorded 'Vendetta' and Keith Flax recorded 'When Heavens At Hand.'" After Glacier disbanded, there was a long silence around the band. It wasn't until 2017 that they performed at the Keep It True Festival under the name Devil In Disguise. Another studio album, »The Passing Of Time«, was released in 2020. Glacier is currently working on brand new material.
