Description
"Dutch singer-songwriter and former DELAIN voice CHARLOTTE WESSELS is unveiling her first studio album in 2024! The Obsession will be released on September 20th via Napalm Records and follows the two compilation albums Tales From Six Feet Under and Tales From Six Feet Under Vol II, which Wessels released as a solo artist. Both contain songs that were initially reserved exclusively for her loyal Patreon community before the collections became physically and digitally available to the general public in 2021 and 2022. At the time, Charlotte played or programmed all the instruments herself and produced them herself in her Six Feet Under Studio. In addition to Patreon, the charismatic artist has built up a loyal, steadily growing fan base with over fifty thousand monthly listeners on Spotify and more than one hundred thousand followers on Instagram alone - now she is driving her solo career forward with The Obsession!
Unlike her compilations, Charlotte has had a lot of fun with The Obsession from the start. worked with other musicians: their former DELAIN colleagues Timo Somers (guitar, additional arrangements), Otto Schimmelpenninck van der Oije (bass) and Joey Marin de Boer (drums) as well as Sophia Vernikov (piano/Hammond). This band structure gives The Obsession a harder, even more lively sound. The album also features enchanting arrangements by Vikram Shankar (Redemption, Silent Skies) and captivating cello playing by Elianne Anemaat. The Obsession was mixed by Guido Aalbers (Muse, Coldplay, Live, Queens Of The Stone Age, The Gathering) and mastered by award-winning mastering engineer Andy VanDette (known for his work with Porcupine Tree, Deep Purple, Dream Theater and many others).
States such as fear, obsessions and escapism are omnipresent on The Obsession and are given the appropriate sound accompaniment by songs such as "The Exorcism", "The Crying Room" and "Ode To The West Wind" (feat. Alissa White-Gluz/Arch Enemy). Emotional tracks such as "Dopamine" (feat. Simone Simons/Epica) and "Praise" - including a gospel choir - approach the topic in a more lively way, with a positive approach, and take the album to another level with their melodies. The reinterpretation of the fan favorite "Soft Revolution" (released in 2021 on Tales From Six Feet Under) leaves no eye dry, while "Soulstice" and "Serpentine" present a new dark sensuality. Each song functions like an exorcism itself - an attempt to expel a piece of the fear it is about.
On The Obsession, CHARLOTTE WESSELS adds a lot of power, intensity and sonic variety to her genre-spanning songwriting. Captivating melancholy and dark, catchy elements meet harder, progressive currents and create a gripping, emotional atmosphere. The storytelling gives the multifaceted album even more depth and makes The Obsession a consistently moving listening experience. CHARLOTTE WESSELS has grown as a solo artist and with The Obsession she delivers without question her best release to date!"
