The Smashing Pumpkins were founded in 1988 in Chicago, Illinois, and released in 1991 the Debut album Gish and found great success with the 4x multi-platinum Siamese Dream from 1993 and the 10x multi-platinum excellent Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995). After the release of Adore, Machina/The Machines of God, and Machina II/The Friends + Enemies of Modern Music, the original line-up dissolved in 2000. Singer/guitarist Billy Corgan reformed the group in 2005 and hired various artists for Zeitgeist, Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, Oceania, and Monuments to an Elegy. In June 2018, The Smashing Pumpkins released Solara, the first song in over 18 years, in which Corgan can be heard alongside green members James Iha (guitar) and Jimmy Chamberlin (drums). Recorded in Malibu, CA at Shangri La Studios with legendary producer Rick Rubin and longtime The Smashing Pumpkins guitarist Jeff Schroeder, the track offers a first glimpse into the upcoming music of the newly reformed line-up.
