Description

CELLAR DARLING's second studio album "The Spell" creates a dark fairy tale of modern times and unfolds in a form of sophisticated progressive folk rock with enchanting artwork and fascinating narrative art. The band was formed in 2016 after Anna Murphy (vocals, hurdy-gurdy), Merlin Sutter (drums) and Ivo Henzi (guitars and bass) left the Swiss folk metal band ELUVEITIE, in which they had all played for over a decade. But the three were not yet ready to end their musical journey together and took a completely new path.

On "The Spell" CELLAR DARLING have clearly found their own sound. Between darkness and light the album rises out of powerful melodies, changes between heavy passages and elegant, progressive ornaments, folky interludes and classical elements - and of course the typical use of hurdy-gurdy and flute is not renounced. "I think that the term 'Prog' best suits us," Merlin reflects. "Prog isn't just about guitar solos, long songs or technical skills: For me it's more about exploring the boundaries of the genre. We don't want to impose restrictions on ourselves, and for me that's the definition of progressive music." His enthusiasm for legendary rock and prog bands such as QUEEN or DREAM THEATER is evident again and again on "The Spell". And also not surprising is the fact that Anna is the child of two professional opera singers, because her breathtaking vocals know how to carry this ambitious album majestically.
