A2Z² is the second critically acclaimed release from the quintet, elevating the status of a supergroup, yet maintaining a fresh and powerful commitment to the band and the music. The band's name comes from Alder--A-Z = Alder thru Zonder--and it was an instant fit. Mark Zonder, the famed former drummer of Fates Warning and Warlord, began working on material in early 2020; he had a very clear vision for the band he wanted to put together. "I thought about beer commercials, car commercials, and Cobra Kai. I wanted a very accessible band that would appeal to the masses and offer the opportunity to go on bigger tours and build a second and third record on the success of the first." The result was A-Z, which reunited him with Fates Warning singer Ray Alder and Warlord/Steve Vai/Ring of Fire bassist Philip Bynoe (three-time Grammy nominee). For the artwork, they turned to the renowned Hugh Syme (Rush, Fates Warning), who provided the vivid image of a zebra eating an apple, cleverly paraphrasing the band's name.
