Clutch wurde 1991 in Germantown, Maryland, USA, gegründet und bestand aus Dan Maines (Bass), Jean-Paul Gaster (Schlagzeug), Tim Sult (Gitarre) und Neil Fallon (Gesang), als sie 1993 beim Warner-Imprint East West Records unterschrieben und ihr erstes Album "Transnational Speedway League" veröffentlichten: Anthems, Anecdotes, and Undeniable Truths". Produziert von Jon Burnside und Steven Haigler, ist das Album ein gutes Schaufenster für ihre früheren, mehr von amerikanischem Punk und Hardcore beeinflussten Wurzeln.
