The songwriting took place over a period of 1.5 years, during which time each of the band members overcame their own trials and tribulations. The end result of their perseverance during this time is more than they had hoped for. "In Death" contains violent compositions, mixed with unforgettable melodies and catchy hooks, which were used purposefully but with care. The songs are about inner torture, the gruesome story of the bubonic plague, false prophets of all religions, the liberation from the suffocating grip of religious or state control, and a cruel story about punishment by a 60-ton steel beast. If the Voracious Scourge line-up is not enough, "In Death" also features a guest solo by two of the most revered guitarists in the metal scene: Andy LaRocque and James Murphy, who both let the strings glow for the first time together on one track.
