Description

When one remembers the legendary American West Coast band The Doors, one usually thinks primarily of their singer Jim Morrison, who tragically died in 1971. Less attention is paid to the three other former band members Ray Manzarek (keyboards), John Densmore (drums) and guitarist and songwriter Robby Krieger. Wrongly so, because Krieger in particular is still working hard to keep the Doors legend alive. He never rested on his laurels after Morrison's death and for many years has also had a weakness for sophisticated jazz rock - to be heard on six corresponding solo albums 'The Ritual Begins At Sundown', which will be released on April 24th via The Players Club (Mascot Label Group). Krieger wrote the album together with Arthur Barrow, who was involved as bass player in 20 albums by Frank Zappa and was his musical director for a long time. For the "The Ritual Begins At Sundown" recordings, Barrow brought other former Zappa companions to Krieger's studio in Los Angeles. "The Ritual Begins At Sundown" comprises ten instrumentals, including a cover version of Frank Zappa's "Chunga's Revenge" in addition to nine new songs. Besides Robby Krieger and Arthur Barrow, former Zappa comrades-in-arms Jock Ellis (trombone), Sal Marquez (trumpet) and Tommy Mars (keyboards) can be heard here, as well as flutist AeB Bryne, saxophonists Vince Denim and Chuck Manning, and drummers Joel Wackerman and Joel Taylor. The album was recorded at Robby Krieger's Horse Latitudes studio in Los Angeles, produced by Krieger and Barrow. As an appetizer for "The Ritual Begins At Sundown", clips for the album tracks "The Drift" and "Slide Home" are already available on YouTube.
