Since she first entered a recording studio about 15 years ago, singer and guitarist Erja Lyytinen has been a fixture on the international blues scene. Another World" is the name of her new album.
The best musicians are masters of reinvention. Bob Dylan's electric revolution at the Newport Folk Festival. Radiohead's brave rebirth with Kid A. Robert Plants fearless escape from the shadows of Led Zeppelin. This list of pioneers and rule-breakers also includes Erja Lyytinen. We've known her for seventeen years as the award-winning slide goddess whose songs regularly stir up the blues rock scene. But with her new studio album "Another World" the Finnish bandleader shows us that we have only scratched the surface so far. "The title of the album describes the idea of entering new musical and spiritual territory," she explains, "I travelled to a new country full of musical ideas and without fear of realizing myself. This album is open, curious and energizing.
"In a cynical world, where bands mostly stick to their familiar schema, Erja has always crossed genre boundaries: from authentic, traditional blues like on their international album debut "Pilgrimage" (2005), to "Voracious Love" (2010), to soulful sounds like on the Elmore James tribute album "The Sky Is Crying" (2014). But after the devastating end of a relationship that eventually became the inspiration for "Stolen Hearts", Erja has now begun a new chapter. "While Stolen Hearts came into being in a very hard time, Another World reflects spring with new life and hope," Erja says. "The whole album is rockier and funkier with elements of blues, pop, hard rock and also prog rock - one of the songs even has an Irish vibe.
"Another World" was written, recorded, mixed and mastered by the best sound architects all over the globe. The songs have gone through legendary stations, including Gavin Lurssen's Grammy-crowned Lurssen Mastering Studio in Los Angeles. It was mixed by Texas Austin-based legend Chris Bell, who has worked with The Eagles, Erykah Badu and Eric Johnson. But Erja's outstanding voice and fiery slide guitar playing give the completely self-written songs their unique style, even though they go through various moods and genres.
